Overview
The Artificial Intelligence major at Beijing Technology and Business University was established in 2021 and was rated as an A-class major by our university in the same year. In 2021 and 2022, it was rated as an A-class major in terms of the comprehensive teaching capability of artificial intelligence majors nationwide by the National University of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Innovation Alliance. In 2023, it was ranked at the B+ level in ShanghaiRanking's Best Chinese Major Ranking. The establishment of this major is closely integrated with Beijing's strategic positioning as a center for scientific and technological innovation, focusing on cultivating engineering and technical talents in the fields of artificial intelligence science, technology, and industrial development. It supports our university's effort to build "Double First-Class" disciplines, contributes to Beijing's high-quality development framework, and serves the national strategic planning for artificial intelligence development. So far, our major has formed a talent development system spanning undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels.
Educational Objectives
Adhere to the goal of "All-round Education," implement the concept of "new engineering," and focus on cultivating compound senior engineering and technical talents who are engaged in artificial intelligence algorithm research, intelligent product design, and artificial intelligence system integration and application in fields such as digital economy, food safety, and intelligentization of light industry. This serves the new pattern of high-quality development in regions such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area and supports the national artificial intelligence development strategy.
Characteristics and Advantages
Guided by the "New Engineering" development, our major constructs a multidisciplinary, cross-disciplinary, and synergistic knowledge system and maintains an in-depth, full-chain university-enterprise integrated practice teaching framework. It explores a cross-departmental, cross-disciplinary, and university-industry coordinated AI talent development mechanism. Centered on two specialized directions-“Intelligent Perception and Edge Computing" and "Pattern Recognition and Machine Vision"—the curriculum emphasizes four levels of knowledge: "perception," "learning," "reasoning," and "decision-making." Through this approach, our major provides students with a solid theoretical foundation in artificial intelligence and a robust professional knowledge system. It also strengthens students’ capabilities in model building and algorithm design, while cultivating their ability to flexibly address complex AI applications and engineering challenges, as well as innovate in practical engineering contexts.
Faculty
Currently, there are 14 full-time faculty members, including 3 professors, 10 associate professors, and 1 lecturer. Among them are 2 doctoral supervisors and 11 master’s supervisors. All full-time faculty members (100%) hold doctoral degrees, over 92% have senior professional titles, and more than 64% have overseas study or further education experiences at well-known foreign universities, such as Duke University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Waterloo, University of California, Imperial College London, etc. Currently, 7 individuals have received titles such as "Beijing High-Level Innovation Plan for Young Outstanding Talents," "Young Outstanding Talents of Beijing Municipal Universities, " "Outstanding Talents of Beijing Organization Department," Outstanding Young Teachers of Beijing, "and "Outstanding Middle-aged and Young Key Teachers of Beijing".
The faculty has strong research capabilities, undertaking more than 40 national and ministerial-level scientific research projects such as the "14th Five-Year" and "13th Five-Year" Ministry of Science and Technology's key research and development plans (topics, sub-topics), National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and Beijing Social Science Foundation. More than 80 horizontal topics have been signed with research institutions or enterprises in industries such as finance, food, light industry, transportation, and coal. Over 300 papers have been published in high-level domestic and international journals and conferences, and more than 70 national invention patents have been authorized.
Core Courses
Based on mathematics and software as the foundation, and the two characteristic directions as the main lines, a integration approach is used to construct the framework of the core courses of the major. The main courses include: Discrete Mathematics, Python Programming, Computer Organization and Architecture, Algorithms and Data Structures, Operating Systems, Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, Digital Systems and Logic Design, FPGA Technology and Applications, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Data Mining Techniques, Digital Image Processing, Machine Vision, Embedded Technology and Smart Terminals, Intelligent Computing Systems, etc.
Practical Training
Our major is committed to developing a multi-tier, full-chain practice teaching system deeply integrated with AI enterprises. It spans various hands-on training stages, including introductory internships, course-based practice, comprehensive practice, and graduation internships, thereby systematically and scientifically cultivating students’ fundamental engineering knowledge and skills, advanced engineering technical abilities, and social practice capabilities abilities. This approach further refines the new model of AI talent development. Currently, this major has signed school-enterprise framework cooperation agreements with several well-known AI companies such as Baidu, Sensetime, Zhipu AI, and AISpeech, jointly building characteristic artificial intelligence laboratories and practical teaching bases. This provides a good ecological environment for talent training and employment.
Further Education and Employment
Regarding further studies, graduates of this program possess expertise and capabilities that integrate multiple disciplines such as artificial intelligence, electronic information, and computer science, enabling them to pursue advanced degrees in various fields at research institutions both domestically and abroad. Additionally, our university provides a comprehensive training system spanning AI undergraduate, AI master’s, system science doctoral, and system science postdoctoral programs.
In terms of employment, China is actively promoting AI-related industries. As industrial upgrading continues, the demand for AI professionals is poised for robust growth. Graduates of our major are perfectly aligned with the nation’s talent needs. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Greater Bay Area serve as the principal hubs for AI industry development and major centers of talent demand. Consequently, graduates from our major enjoy strong career advantages and promising prospects in these regions.
